Music

Music at Low Furness

At Low Furness Primary School we aim to allow children to take part in and experience music in a wide and rich variety of contexts.

Our hope is to foster a life–long love of music at the same time as upholding our Christian values. In music teaching we value inclusion, expression, community, creativity and self-confidence. We immerse our children in an environment where we all are encouraged to actively and regularly take part and engage in music across a wide variety of musical genres, styles, traditions and eras. This takes the form of music lessons, music of the day, classical daily listening and singing in worship.

We use CUSP Music curriculum which has been purposefully built around the principles of evidence-led practice. This is to ensure that there is a focus on high-quality development of children as musicians. The curriculum is carefully designed to build pupils’ musical knowledge and develop their competency and confidence as musicians. Each block includes the study of significant musicians and musical works, with the intention of exposing pupils to a wide range of music that will inspire them and connect them to the world around them.  It also provides us with a wealth of songs, which we enjoy singing in class, collective worship and Church. We teach the skills of performing, singing, playing instruments, listening and evaluating music and develop alongside the interrelated dimensions of pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Our Music curriculum, helps to foster our school vision of love for self, love of others, love of learning and love of the world in many different ways. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in our wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts. These include community events such as performing in local nursing homes, church concerts and services, larger national concerts, choir, whole school collective worship and class assemblies. We feel that performing music in this way gives a sense of confidence, self-esteem, belonging and pride.

We also recognise that through music we can develop and nurture our spirituality. Music allows us to live ‘in the moment’ allowing us to connect with our inner-selves and express our emotions freely. We help children to find wonder and joy in music, allowing it to uplift and inspire us.
