History at Low Furness

The aim of our History curriculum is to spark curiosity in the world we live in. We want to build a love for the world around us.

At Low Furness CE Primary School, our History curriculum helps teach our children to engage and understand the past and how events in the past have led to the creation of the world which they live in today.  Our History provision aims to teach our children to engage and understand the past and how events in the past have led to the creation of the world which they live in today.

We use ‘CUSP’ to enhance our History curriculum as it best supports the opportunities we want to give our children. Our History curriculum is progressive and builds upon knowledge previously taught.  It is organised into six substantive concepts and six disciplinary knowledge strands:

Substantive Concepts

  • Community
  • Knowledge
  • Invasion
  • Civilisation
  • Power
  • Democracy

Disciplinary Knowledge

  • Chronology
  • Cause and consequence
  • Change and continuity
  • Similarity and difference
  • Evidence
  • Significance

Our History curriculum helps to foster a love for self, love of others, love of learning and love of the world in many different ways:

  • It helps to teach the importance of compassion, justice and standing up for what’s right.
  • Through our Local History studies, it allows us explore how people in the local area have supported one another in times of need.
  • Exploring different scientists, leaders and peacemakers helps build appreciation for the value of every person.
